Description of Tool or App:


Edmodo is a secure social media platform where students and teacher can interact about school. Students and teachers can use Edmodo to collaborate on schoolwork. Teachers can post comments, assignments, resources, quizzes, or announcements. Students can turn in homework, participate in class discussions, and search resources provided by the instructor. Parents can create an account and monitor student activities, assignments, grades, and calendar. It is a collaborative learning environment – a virtual classroom.

Edmodo is set up in a format similar to Facebook so it is easy for students and teachers to use. They provide an extensive list of FAQs for teachers, parents, and students. Teacher help topics including security best practices and how to roll out Edmodo. There are some terms of use that teachers need to be aware of. Edmodo can only be used for school purposes and the teacher is responsible for monitoring this on their site. All students under the age of 13 must have parental permission to use Edmodo.

Constraints of Tools or App

  • App does not have all of the features as the full version website
  • There have been some technical issues during the transition to a new version causing disruption of certain features for short periods of time.
  • Cannot export grades for just one student, you have to export all student grades into one spreadsheet.
  • Recent history section shows all users even those that you do not teach


How To Use Tool or App


To use Edmodo you need to sign up for a free account. To sign up for an account go to www.edmodo.com and click on the “I’m a teacher button.”



Choose a unique login and password. Enter your school issued email address in the Email field and fill in the title and name fields as they apply to you. Click the Sign up button.



If your school district has its own subdomain, you will be prompted to enter your school’s Edmodo code, you can get this from a district administrator if it applies to you. If your school does not have its own subdomain you will be sent directly into your account. The first two posts to your Edmodo account will be directions to help you get started.

Classroom Uses for Tool or App


Student Uses

  • Students can access assignments for directions, turned in assignments, commented on how they felt about the assignment, and check their grades.
  • They can post questions to Edmodo when they need help outside of the normal school day and get feedback from peers and/or the teacher.
  • Students have access to a calendar that automatically keeps track of assignments from all their classes. This is great for organization and time management.
  • Students can access resources for assignments that are specific to what is being learning and approved by the teacher.

Teacher Uses

  • Student work can be accessed from any devise with an internet connection. No more hauling papers back and forth from school to home in order to get your grading done.
  • Posts, websites, videos and more can be added to different folders in your library and used for professional development or with students when appropriate.
  • Multiple types of quizzes can be administered through Edmodo. Multiple-choice quizzes can be automatically graded and entered into the grade book.
  • Surveys/Polls can be used to gather data from students.
  • The discover link can connect you to other teachers who teach the same content you do. Many resources are shared here.
